Today I am devoting my blog to another favorite blog of mine. I was talking to my sister-in-law, Tamsin, and she mentioned how she loves a good blog. I am sure we can all agree that finding a great blog with neat ideas and info is always inspiring. Well, I have several of those (including Tamsins), but today I am going to tell you about one called Missed Connections!
Sophie Blackall is a quarky artist who creates works of art based off of "Missed Connection" postings. Ya know, the personal ads that people post when they have crossed the path of someone that made an impression on them. I think it is amazing that people post these ads in the first place and it's sweet how Sophie interperets their feelings into art! Sophie does a much more poetic justice of describing her projects, "Messages in bottles, smoke signals, letters written in the sand; the modern equivalents are the funny, sad, beautiful, hopeful, hopeless, poetic posts on Missed Connections websites. Every day hundreds of strangers reach out to other strangers on the strength of a glance, a smile or a blue hat. Their messages have the lifespan of a butterfly. I'm trying to pin a few of them down."
I always look forward to a new post popping up on my google reader from missed connections! Here is a taste of the last two that I LOVE!...
Freckles and Bruises, this one is kind of sad. If you pay attention to the details the spots on her shirt seem like bruises all over her body. They trail down from her eyes to her neck and her wrists! Its super sad, but sweet what the original postee says!
Then there is the silly one, In the Library, Browsing, their story is so silly it makes me giggle to imagine their greeting! I hope they meet again in the library...
Each one holds a story and a sense of hope to find a uniqe connection in the world. Her art is inspiring and these peoples stories, taken off of sites like craigslist, are enough to prick your emotions. If you want to hear from Sophie herself, Bablegum did a short video that features her and her artwork. I think you should check it out!
